The formal logline for the HBO Max Original Comedy special is as follows:

“Wayans delivers an uproarious hour-long performance at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theater, releasing his spot-on mannerisms and daring physical humor to address one of pop culture’s most notorious recent events – “the smack” at the 94th Academy Awards® celebration.”

It goes on to say:

“With his inimitable blunt and boisterous style, Wayans skillfully weaves anecdotes from his own life with stories about his long-time friends, from divulging his teenage crush on Jada Pinkett Smith, getting humbled by Chris Rock in an early stand-up set, and examining the impact of Will Smith’s long career. This special is a daring tour de force, an amusing yet sober examination of friendship, family, mistakes, and forgiveness.”

Marlon Wayans: God Loves Me could be Wayans’ most personal project to date

In an Instagram video in support of Marlon Wayans: God Loves Me, the actor and comic mentioned the infamous smack, revealing that it “jolted something” in him.

According to Wayans:

“It took my breath away and forced me to reconsider my own existence, both emotionally and professionally.”

Will, Chris, and Jada were his friends, and his “emotional relationship” with them gave him “a distinct perspective on what happened.”

The article ended with the following statement:

“However, this program isn’t about ‘The Smack,’ but about how that incident changed me. This debate was required. My only goal is to avoid causing harm to anyone involved. Its goal is to make people laugh. Recovery starts when you unload your wounds and find a way to laugh at your pain. This program tells the story of how I discovered that God truly loves me.”

In a Warner Media news statement, Marlon Wayans revealed that he was “happy to be back in business with HBO Max. He stated, ”

“We’ve had a lot of success with my last two shows, so this will be fantastic. I know HBO Max and the refined crew of executives are notorious for being true comic tastemakers and snobs, so I’m glad they thought this special was… exceptional.”

Marlon Wayans: God Loves Me, produced and published by HBO Max, will be available for viewing in over 61 countries worldwide on March 2, 2023.
