Martin Hewitt - My Career Went Straight Down The Shitter After "Endless Love"
That was his first professional job, and afterwards no one would hire him for anything. His career went straight down the shitter.
He now runs a Home Inspection Business.
So what happened?
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 110 | August 17, 2019 10:43 PM |
He was better than Brooke Shields, actually, and got decent enough reviews. I imagine he walked away from it all.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 14, 2019 4:06 AM |
Strange because he said his goal was to do theater, yet after Endless Love he seemed to pound the pavement trying to break into films, when she should have just concentrated on theater.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 14, 2019 4:07 AM |
Maybe Franco Zeffirelli molested him.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 14, 2019 4:09 AM |
Weird. I just watched this for the first time today. He was incredibly sexy in it and I can't get over the fact that Brooke was only 15 at the time. This would never fly today where you have a 22 year sharing passionate lovemaking scenes (surely they used a body double for her?) with a young teen. Yikes! Brooke was stunning though and they had great chemistry together.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 14, 2019 4:10 AM |
R6 Unfortunately, that wouldn't have ended his career. It probably would have extended it. If anything, Hewitt probably said no and THAT'S what ended his career.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 14, 2019 4:11 AM |
OP - Why did Amy Madigan's career go straight down the shitter?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 14, 2019 4:20 AM |
R10 because Ed Harris paid the bills, so there was no need for her to push her career that hard
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 14, 2019 4:23 AM |
r11 How Amy managed to ensnare studly Ed I will never comprehend
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 14, 2019 4:26 AM |

Yes, Shields has a body double for both this and THE BLUE LAGOON. Hewitt had to wear a special “cock sock” when he faced Shields naked, too. Mama Shields insisted. (Maybe it was drunko Teri Shields who molested him, and that’s what turned him off acting?)
BREAKING NEWS: I had no idea he was on THE LOVE BOAT!

He was also in the timeless masterpiece Two Moon Junction, with Sherilyn Fenn, Richard Tyson, Louise Fletcher, Burl Ives, and Kristy McNichol. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 14, 2019 6:17 AM |
ENDLESS LOVE kind of killed her career for a while. She was the star, and it wasn’t a hit like THE BLUE LAGOON was.
It showed that people weren’t going to flock to see her in just anything.
Poor dear.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 14, 2019 6:24 AM |
I thought it was just great when it came out. I've never gone back to see it again though. Zeffirelli held open calls in a few cities and I remember going and dropping off a picture, but nobody ever called, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 14, 2019 6:25 AM |
From Wikipedia:
While enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, CA and working as bartender and valet car park/parking lot attendant, Hewitt saw an ad for an open call for a film directed by Franco Zeffirelli and beat out 5,000 actors, including Tom Cruise and Timothy Hutton and r32.

R45 Endless Love was an infuriating movie. His character was a piece of shit. What makes it worse is apparently in the book Brooke's character ends up with a woman.
The novel is great, kind of lyrical and lost and savage at the same time. I can’t explain what makes Scott Spencer such a good writer - he just uses language well. Part of the reason the movie’s crappy is that the first person narration is taken away, and that’s the best part.
[quote]Why, then, if we never quite believe in David's obsession, does most of this book compel? Because of Spencer's moment-by-moment perception, detail, and comic/dramatic scene-making. Because of the gorgeously stark prose... But, above all, because whether David's particular excessive fixation convinces on a literal level, his story works absolutely as a massive metaphor for whatever endless loves, hates, or fears the reader brings to the book: "If endless love was a dream, then it was a dream we all shared, even more than we all shared the dream of never dying or traveling through time, and if anything set me apart it was not my impulses but my stubbornness, my willingness to take the dream past what had been agreed upon as the reasonable limits..." With all its flaws, excesses, and perversities--a daring, original, and important work. (KIRKUS REVIEW, 1979)

[quote] Endless Love is one of those books which, strung out over the space of more than ten years, tells its whole story by telling very little in enormous detail. The effortless narrative technique is masterful, and the prose itself has a sharpness and richness that seem capable of describing almost anything. The scenes of sex, for instance, the immense epic scenes of sex, are absolutely breathtaking, but never gratuitous; they are central to the story Spencer is telling, perhaps the most central thing.
[quote]There is an immense sadness to this book ... It is the sadness that the past inevitably has, that these things happened and those did not, a life was given to this and not to that, a happiness that seemed available was not achieved. It is a sadness that the reality of our lives always has, but to find it expressed with such clarity and poignance in a work of art is rare.

Yes- this is more jarring to modern audiences. With the book, you don't actually SEE that play out, so you reason, "Well, the mom's a bohemian writer, so ... okay, I guess." But modern viewers are like, "What the HELL??"

This is kind of interesting. The interviewer is TERRIBLE, but you get to see the obscure Hewitt talking as himself rather than as a character.
He does shush Brooke before they start, and she gives him a bit of a glare. Then when the first question goes to her, he sighs deeply. But he mellows out. Maybe he was just kidding.

Martin has a model face, not an actor face. As an 'actor' he had two expressions: 1) sad/serious/angry and 2) toothy smile.
There's no doubt Zefferelli hit that.

That may have been part of it, but the breakup was also instigated by their house burning down, and the family having to reformulate.
