The Top 5 Moments at The VMAs

2011 MTV Video Music Awards - Show

Last night MTV aired the 31st annual Video Music Awards (VMAs), and in usual VMA fashion there was lots of surprises and even more entertainment.  Saturday Night Live’s Jay Pharoah hosted last night’s show and provided lots of comic relief in between awards and performances.The popular award show, in which winners receive a “moon man” trophy, was held in Inglewood, California and featured performances by some of pop culture’s biggest musical acts including Nicki Minaj, Sam Smith, and queen of the hive, Beyonce.  While there were many exciting moments during yesterday’s show, there are a few that deserve further mention.  Here is a list of the top five moments at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

5. Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda Performance

Nicki Minaj, who has become almost as famous for her body as she is for her musical talents, took the stage last night to perform her latest single, “Anaconda.” Her routine was a high energy live rendition of the song’s video which hit the airwaves last week which included lots of dance moves.

4. Sam Smith’s performance of “Stay With Me”

After being introduced by his “friend,” Kim Kardashian-West,  singer, Sam Smith, effortlessly sang his hit single, “Stay With Me.” Smith’s vocals sounded incredible live and while his performance was not flashy and did not include any back up singers it was one of the night’s best.

3. Miley Cyrus’ Acceptance Speech

Last year’s VMAs was not one of Miley’s most shining moments; however, the young star was able to redeem herself this year.  After winning the award for Best Video of the Year, Miley, who was in tears sent her friend, Jesse, to accept the award on stage.  While on stage Jesse shared with viewers the struggles he endured while being homeless and called to attention the issue of homelessness in America.

2. Moment of Silence for Michael Brown

Rap artist, Common, known for his socially conscious rhymes, took the stage last night to honor Michael Brown, the young Missouri man who, while unarmed, was shot and killed by a local police officer.  Noting that rap music has always been at the forefront of social change and awareness asked for a moment of silence for “Mike Brown and for peace in this country and in the world.”

1. Beyonce’s Performance

Beyonce, who has become the United State’s version of royalty, graced the world with her presence last night when she took the stage at the VMA’s to perform a medly of her latest self titled album.  While Beyonce worked the stage, her daughter, Blu Ivy had her own moment in the spotlight when the cameras turned to her during her mother’s performance of “Flawless,” and the two year old was caught clapping and dancing while sitting on her father’s lap.  Beyonce’s performance, full of her signature moves and impeccable stage presence was made even more memorable when her husband, Jay-Z, and daughter, Blu Ivy took the stage following her last number.  Overcome by emotion and standing next to her family, Beyonce thanked her fans and professed her love to Jay and Blu while accepting her Michael Jackson Vanguard Award which was presented to her by Jay-Z.
