A Port Charlotte man is facing charges, following the discovery of a corpse in a Sarasota hotel room on Thursday.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Hyatt Place Hotel at 950 University Parkway in Sarasota shortly before noon on Thursday after workers discovered a man’s death in the hotel.

Colton Wights, an Illinois resident, was the victim. He had been dating Brennan Wakey, 25, who was arrested the same day in connection with the crime.

Wright’s mother revealed that her son had lately broken up with Wakey. Wakey was domineering during their relationship, she claims, and she feels her son was a victim of domestic abuse.

According to court documents, Colton Wright had suffered a gunshot wound to the face. 

Following that, Wakey was charged with murder when authorities discovered Wright and an unknown male booked into the hotel after 10 p.m. on December 8th.

Investigators say surveillance footage shows Wright, Wakey, and the mysterious guy in a nearby McDonald’s drive-thru a short time later. The three were then spotted getting out of the automobile in the hotel parking lot at 2:30 a.m. on CCTV cameras.

Wakey is caught on camera heading out of the building rapidly with bags and a handgun in his waistband after a half-hour.

Moreover, deputies from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office discovered the 25-year-old about 4 a.m. Thursday after a car tag reader caught his plate number. He was arrested and sent to the Charlotte County Jail.
